Salesian Formation for Novices
The Salesian formation process for novices who aspire to become sisters is a structured journey of spiritual growth, education, and discernment, rooted in the Salesian charism and the congregation’s unique traditions. The journey begins with the Novitiate, which spans two years. During the first year, novices focus on deepening their spiritual life through prayer and understanding Salesian spirituality. In the second year, their studies shift to include the congregation’s history, its constitution, and the essentials of apostolic life.
Key Elements of Formation
Several elements are central to the formation process. Spiritual Direction plays a vital role, with experienced sisters providing regular guidance to support novices on their journey. Community Life fosters relationships and collaboration as novices live together, share responsibilities, and build strong, supportive bonds rooted in their shared mission. Apostolic Experiences further enrich formation, allowing novices to engage in Salesian ministries through a month-long practical experience within various communities. A well-rounded Study Program includes theology, scripture, Salesian history, and pedagogy, which together lay a foundation for future service and deepen understanding of their vocation. Prayer and Reflection are incorporated into daily life, encouraging novices to nurture their inner life and align with Salesian values. Discernment is an ongoing process, as novices continually reflect on their calling and assess their suitability for Salesian life. Additionally, Work and Service are emphasized; novices actively contribute to the community by engaging in activities like oratories and Sunday catechism, prioritizing service to young and vulnerable people.
Salesian Spirituality
Salesian spirituality is at the heart of this journey, focusing on the motto Da mihi animas, cetera tolle, which calls for saving souls through education and evangelization. Following Don Bosco’s example, the formation prioritizes service to the young and poor, upholding a preferential option for vulnerable populations. Novices are encouraged to embody the virtues of joy, simplicity, and humility in all aspects of life. Devotion to Mary, Help of Christians, is also central, as novices seek her guidance and intercession throughout their formation.
Formation Team
The formation team provides support and guidance at every stage. The Novice Mistress is responsible for overseeing and accompanying novices through their formation. Formators provide further support through spiritual direction, teaching, and mentorship to encourage spiritual and personal growth. Salesian Sisters also play an important role by sharing their experiences, offering wisdom, and providing a model of the Salesian way of life.
Through this comprehensive formation process, novices are prepared to fully embrace the Salesian mission, spirituality, and values, dedicating themselves to the congregation’s mission of service and education.
